Overview
One-way car insurance covers damage you cause to others, but not damage to your own car when you're at fault. Two-way car insurance also covers your own car. What one-way includes is different in Quebec and Ontario. Your policy documents show which one you have.
One-way and two-way car insurance in Quebec
In Quebec, all insurance companies use the same standard car insurance policy. It has two sections:
- Section A is required for all car owners. It covers civil liability, which means damage or injuries you cause to others
- Section B is optional and covers damage to your own car
- One-way car insurance has Section A only
- Two-way car insurance has both Section A and Section B
One-way and two-way car insurance in Ontario
In Ontario, one-way car insurance includes four coverages:
- Third-party liability, which covers damage or injuries you cause to others
- Accident benefits, which cover your own injuries in an accident
- Direct compensation property damage (DCPD), which covers damage to your car when another driver is at fault
- Uninsured automobile coverage, which protects you if a driver without insurance hits you
With one-way car insurance, damage to your car is only covered if the accident isn't your fault. Two-way car insurance adds coverage for damage to your car when you're at fault.
