Overview
If you sold your car, you can transfer your car insurance to another car or cancel it. If you cancel and attach your bill of sale, you can get money back for the time since the sale date, minus any cancellation fee.
This applies if you sold your car, or no longer have a car to insure.
Option 1: Transfer your policy to a new car
If you're buying or leasing another car soon, transfer your policy to it. You avoid the cancellation fee and stay insured. See our Transfer your car insurance policy to a new car article.
Option 2: Cancel your car insurance
If you don't need car insurance anymore, cancel it so you stop paying for a car you don't own.
- Sign in to your YouSet account
- Under your Car insurance policy, select Modify Policy
- Select Cancellation and non-renewal
- Follow the steps on the screen
What happens after
- YouSet reviews your request and sends it to your insurance company
- You get a confirmation email within 48 hours
Getting money back since the sale date
If you attach a bill of sale, YouSet asks your insurance company to end your policy on the date you sold your car. Once it's approved, your insurance company refunds the unused time, minus any cancellation fee.
Frequently asked questions
What if I don't have a bill of sale?
Without a bill of sale, your policy can only end on a date after your request. You won't get money back for the time before it.
I have more than one car on my policy. Do I need to cancel?
No. You only need to remove the car you sold. See our Remove a car from your policy article.
